The Foundation for Environmental Research (FER) is a public, non-profit organization dedicated to understanding and improving the Earth’s environment. FER's research agenda includes applied and basic research in all aspects of environmental science. FER is particularly interested in research whose impact on society is not commensurate with current funding levels.

As part of its mission, FER supports other non-profit organizations engaged in environmental research. To this end, FER is involved in a variety of activities that range from funding research on the state of the environment to making targeted purchases of land critical for environmental conservation.
